The Complete Soy Candle Care Guide

Soy candles are a considered choice - cleaner, slower-burning, and more nuanced in fragrance than paraffin alternatives. But to get the most from them, they reward a little care and attention. This guide answers the most common questions our customers ask, so every burn is as good as the first.

1. Hot Throw: Why Does My Candle Smell Stronger When Lit?

"Hot throw" refers to the scent a candle releases when it is burning. Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin, which means fragrance is released more gently and gradually — filling a room steadily rather than in an immediate rush. For the best hot throw:

  • Burn in a room sized appropriately for the candle's diameter — smaller jars suit intimate spaces; larger vessels work for open-plan areas.
  • Allow adequate time for the wax pool to reach the edges before you judge the scent intensity (see the first burn rule below).
  • Avoid strong competing air currents, such as open windows or fans pointed directly at the flame.

2. The First Burn Rule: The Most Important Burn You'll Ever Do

Soy wax has a memory. On the very first burn, allow the candle to remain lit until the entire surface has melted into a full, even wax pool reaching the edges of the container. This typically takes 1–2 hours for smaller jars and up to 3–4 hours for wider vessels.

If you extinguish the candle before the wax pool reaches the edges, the wax will begin to tunnel — forming a narrow channel down the centre that wastes fragrance and shortens the life of the candle significantly. The first burn sets the pattern for every subsequent burn.

3. Wick Trimming: The Single Habit That Changes Everything

Before every burn — including the very first — trim the wick to 5 mm (approximately ¼ inch). A wick that is too long will:

  • Produce a large, flickering flame and excess soot
  • Cause the candle to burn too hot and too fast
  • Reduce scent throw as combustion outpaces fragrance release
  • Potentially cause the jar to overheat

Use a wick trimmer or small scissors. If a mushroom-shaped carbon deposit forms on the wick tip, allow the candle to cool fully, then remove it before relighting. Keeping the wick trim is the single most effective way to extend burn time and maintain scent quality.

4. Burn Time: How Long Should a Soy Candle Last?

Burn time varies by candle size and how the candle is cared for. As a general guide:

  • Small jars (100–150 g): 20–30 hours
  • Medium jars (200–300 g): 35–50 hours
  • Large vessels (300 g+): 50–80+ hours

Soy candles that are not tunnelled and are burned with a trimmed wick will consistently reach the higher end of their estimated burn time. Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours in a single session; allow it to cool and resolidify before relighting.

5. Scent Longevity: Keeping the Fragrance True Over Time

Fragrance oils in soy wax can degrade with exposure to light, heat, and air. To preserve scent longevity:

  • Store unlit candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Keep the lid on when not in use to prevent fragrance from dissipating and to protect the wax surface from dust.
  • Avoid placing candles near open windows when not burning — UV light and air movement accelerate fragrance loss in the wax.

A well-stored soy candle can retain its scent integrity for 12–18 months from the date of purchase.

6. Ventilation: Fresh Air vs. Draught

A candle flame needs adequate oxygen to burn cleanly. However, there is an important distinction between ventilation and draught:

  • Good ventilation: a well-aired room with calm airflow supports a steady, even flame and clean scent diffusion.
  • Draught: direct airflow from fans, open windows, or air-conditioning vents causes the flame to flicker, burn unevenly, and produce soot. It also causes one side of the wax pool to melt faster, leading to uneven burns.

Light your candle in a calm environment. If you notice the flame flickering consistently, relocate the candle to a more sheltered spot before continuing.

7. Safe Placement: Where to Burn and Where Not To

Always burn candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface and follow these placement principles:

  • Keep at least 10 cm (4 inches) of clear space around and above the candle — away from curtains, shelving, books, and soft furnishings.
  • Keep candles out of reach of children and pets.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended or in an unoccupied room.
  • Do not burn on glass shelves, plastic surfaces, or directly on wooden furniture without a protective mat or tray.
  • Stop burning when 1–1.5 cm of wax remains in the jar — burning below this point can cause the glass to overheat.
